Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Combining Ingredients

  • Add the flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  • Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.
  • Gently fold in 1 1/2 cups of M&M's into the batter.

Baking

  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Decoration
