Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: eggs, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  • In a small bowl, mix the topping sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle over the batter. Optional: drizzle with additional melted butter.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cooling and Serving

  • Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Slice and enjoy warm, perhaps with butter or your favorite jam.

Notes

For variations, consider adding chocolate chips or nuts to the batter. If you don’t have buttermilk, substitute with milk mixed with vinegar or lemon juice. Store tightly wrapped at room temperature for up to three days or freeze individual slices.
